PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which suits logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp text. JPG uses lossy compression that is very efficient for photographs, so a photo saved as JPG is often a fraction of the size of the same photo as PNG.

What happens to transparency
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas become white. If you need another background colour, add it in an image editor before converting.
When to keep the PNG
Keep the PNG for logos, text-heavy screenshots and anything you will edit again. JPG adds small artifacts around sharp edges, and each time you re-save a JPG it loses a little more quality. For everyday photos, a quality setting between 80 and 90 percent is a good starting point.
