Extract text from images
Recognize printed text in photos and scans, then copy it or save it as a .txt file. Images are processed on your device.
Add pages
Photos or scans of documents. Files stay on your device.
How it works
- Add images or capture a page.
- Choose the language of the text.
- Select Extract text, then copy or download the result.
What OCR does
OCR (optical character recognition) reads the letters in a picture and turns them into text you can copy and edit. It works on screenshots, scans, photos of book pages, signs and printed forms.
How to get better results
- Use a sharp, well-lit photo without shadows across the text.
- Keep the page straight. Use Crop to remove the background around a page.
- Try the Document filter for low-contrast scans.
- Choose the correct language before you extract the text.
- Higher resolution helps with small print.
What it cannot do well
Handwriting, decorative fonts and text on busy backgrounds are unreliable. Tables and columns come out as plain lines of text, so you may need to tidy the layout afterwards.
Languages and the first run
You can choose English, Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Turkish, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese or Indonesian. The first time you use a language, your browser downloads its language data, so the first run is slower. Your browser may keep that data for next time.
Questions
- Is it free?
- Yes. There is no watermark, no signup and no page limit for normal use.
- Are my documents uploaded?
- No. Scanning, filters and PDF creation run in your browser. Text recognition also runs on your device; only the OCR engine and language data are downloaded.
- How accurate is the OCR?
- Clear, well lit, printed text works best. Use the Document filter to improve contrast on shadowed pages.
- Is my image sent to a server for recognition?
- No. The recognition runs in your browser. Only the OCR engine and language data are downloaded.
- Does it work offline?
- Not the first time, because the engine and language data must be downloaded. Do not rely on offline use.
